I saw this Facebook riddle come across my feed, twice now, about parents showing up at your door at 7 a.m., a variety of things in the fridge, and something about knocking… with the payoff asking “What will you open first?”
And the answer is not as simple as it may seem.
To matters even more confusing, this riddle seems to have kicked off some heated debates over what is and what is not the correct answer. Friends and families continue to clash in ways unseen since that Titans movie. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit, but it does seem that people don’t necessarily agree with what has been deemed the correct answer.
Perhaps that’s because they are trying to answer the riddle at 7 am? Maybe they haven’t had enough coffee yet? Who knows!
But just in case this Facebook riddle has come across your news feed, below you will find the correct answer (as of the posting of this article, of course).
Here is the content of the It’s 7 am – What Will You Open First Facebook Riddle
Facebook What Will You Open First Riddle
The Facebook riddle intro text:
This is the preamble to the riddle itself, where the person posting the riddle explains the rules, the rewards, and the risks to playing along.
The core of the message reads:
So I’m challenging my smart, intelligent friends, to have a crack at guessing the answer to the riddle below. When you think you know, PM me in Messenger the answer. Don’t answer in the comments , it will be deleted. If you are not going to follow the instructions after you lose, please don’t answer.
Your turn! Read the riddle. If your answer is incorrect, I can choose any of your photos and you have to post it along with the riddle. If you answer correctly, I’ll write your name in the comments (with a trophy emoji.)
You may wonder how many people would attempt to answer the riddle with that kind of risk/reward structure. After all, a trophy emoji isn’t something you can take to the bank. And the idea of having someone else pick one of your photos for posting could lead to large amounts of embarrassment. But people are doing it in droves.
And that’s part of the reason that this riddle keeps circulating. If you lose (and most will) you have to post the riddle on your own Facebook news feed for your friends and families to enjoy.
The Riddle Itself
Once you get through the preamble, it’s time to get to the guts of the riddle.
Riddle: It’s 7 am.
You are asleep and there is a sudden knock on the door.
Behind the door are your parents who came to have breakfast. In your fridge are bread, milk (pasteurized), juice, and a jar of jam.
To answer, what will you open first? Answer directly through Messenger only, answers in the comment section will be deleted.
Note: It’s not what you think. So far no one has got it. Read carefully.
Answering the Facebook 7 am – What Will You Open First Riddle
The reason why so few people are getting it “right” is that the answer is a tricky one, and depends on how you define “answer”.
To answer, in the context of the riddle… aka to “answer” the knock on the door… the first thing you open is NOT your front door.
That, of course, is the polite answer… after all, your parents are outside, possibly in the freezing cold. And it makes sense to jump to the conclusion that in order to answer the knock on the door, the first thing you would do is open the door.
All of that stuff about what’s in the fridge at the time is a bit of a red herring.
But it’s important to remember that you were asleep when the knock occurred, so there are a whole bunch of steps that have to take place between that moment and when you can get yourself to the door.
That is why the correct answer is (or – at least – it should be)….
The first thing you open is your eyes.
You were – after all – asleep. (People who sleep with their eyes open notwithstanding). Everything else should be irrelevant.
This is the most common answer to the riddle. But, if you submit this as your answer, you will not be getting a trophy emoji.
Yes, this is the correct answer for the riddle… if you were to ask it in any traditional format.
BUT KEEP READING!!!
However, if you take “to answer” in the context of the post instead of to the riddle….
The first thing you open is Messenger as that is how you’ve been asked to respond.
To do this, you have to go back to the intro and the extro of the riddle itself. How many times did the post say variations of “PM me in Messenger”?
But it all comes down to actually ignoring the riddle itself and focusing on the last section:
“To answer, what will you open first? Answer directly through Messenger only, answers in the comment section will be deleted.”
That line doesn’t say “to answer the 7 am knock on the door”, it simply says “to answer”. In order to answer the riddle the correct way, you have to open Messenger.
This appears to be the current “correct” answer, although I do think that is debatable. Is the medium the message in this case?
But, to make matters worse, the post itself is vague enough that the true answer is…
That you need to open your mind first …
To the possibility that there is more than one correct answer, depending on how you read the question. But, perhaps, that is just me being far too philosophical. Although some of the best riddles make you think beyond the obvious.
A man walks into a bar. Ouch!
As Social Media changes our lives, it also appears to be changing the basic principles of riddles.
That is why the correct answer to this riddle actually has nothing to do with the knock on the door at 7 am, it has everything to do with the instructions on how to play the game.
Therefore, if you want to avoid having to post some embarrassing picture because you got the answer wrong, for now, I would go with:
But, if you want to play it safe – and retail a certain sense of righteousness, I would suggest answering in two parts:
To answer the door, you will need to open your eyes first. To answer the riddle, you will have to open messenger first.
After all, there is nothing in the instructions about not being able to provide a two-part answer. 🙂
And so there you have it, my non-answer to the “What will you open first” Facebook riddle.
