Anglerfish are extremely bony fish named for their characteristic mode of hunting for food, in which a fleshy growth from the fish’s head acts as a lure to their prey. They often look like something out of a horror or science fiction movie, and perhaps that is one of the reasons that the anglerfish is so fascinating.

Although those who know of anglerfish have a particular image in mind, there are actually over 200 different species of anglerfish. Most anglerfish live in the lightless depths of the Atlantic and Antarctic oceans, as far as a mile below the ocean’s surface. Typically, they have large heads, big mouths with sharp, translucent teeth, and the iconic outgrowth used to attract prey. Although some species of anglerfish can grow to become very large (over 3 feet in length), most are significantly smaller, often measuring less than one foot.

Why People Are Fascinated with Anglerfish Decor

Anglerfish have a long, spiny dorsal fin that sticks out of the water, and they use it to attract prey. When a fish gets close, the anglerfish bites it with its sharp teeth, and then swallows it whole.

There are hundreds of species of anglerfish, and many of them look very different from each other. Some look smooth and slimy, some have hair on their bodies, and some have elaborate patterns all over their skin. Most anglerfish live near the bottom of the ocean where it is dark and cold, but there are a few species that hunt during the day. They use sunlight to attract prey instead of bioluminescence like most species do.

Although many people think that they are ugly, anglerfish are fascinating creatures! Here are ten things you may not know about them:

1) The parts of an anglerfish’s body are arranged in strange ways compared to most fish. For example, the mouth is located on the underside of its head. An anglerfish’s stomach can also stretch to many times its usual size after it eats a meal, so it can take days for an anglerfish to digest its food.

2) One interesting way that some species of anglerfish reproduce is by fusing their bodies together. When two anglerfish are close together, they release special chemicals that cause them to fuse into one organism with one large body! The organisms are still male and female, but they both have the organs necessary to make babies. This process is called sexual parasitism because each partner receives sperm from the other without providing any in return. They do not need to eat while they are fused together either since they can absorb nutrients from their partner’s body.

3) By the time an anglerfish is fully grown, it has few predators other than humans and other anglerfish. This is because its body is full of a chemical called tetrodotoxin that makes it taste very bad to its preditors. The toxin does not seem to affect humans, so scientists sometimes study it in order to find drugs and other chemicals that will be useful for science and medicine.

4) Females anglerfish release special hormones into the water that tell nearby males when they are ready to reproduce. When a male finds a female, he bites her with his sharp teeth and releases an enzyme that melts the skin around her stomach. After this happens, the male’s body fuses to the female’s body.

5) The male anglerfish is very small compared to the female – sometimes up to ten times smaller! Although he is often eaten by predators after they mate, some scientists believe that males may live long enough to fertilize other females as well.

6) There are many species of anglerfish in different colors and shapes. Some species have smooth bodies while others have fur all over their bodies! The hairy frog fish, which lives near Australia and Indonesia, has hair-like growths covering its body like fur coats on a cat.

7) Some deep-sea anglerfish have strange features that help them live underwater in the dark. One interesting feature is the esca, which is a fishing lure on top of their heads! The esca glows in the dark with chemicals called luciferins, and it attracts small fish when they approach it.

8) Bioluminescent light can be produced by many different types of chemicals. Some anglerfish, such as the black seadevil, have an organ called a photophore that produces light by using luciferins. Other species have similar organs that produce light by using other chemicals or even electricity!

9) There are several different types of anglerfish living in the deep ocean today. The first type is known as Ceratioid anglerfish because they are very large with long bodies and large mouths filled with sharp teeth! These fish are found around the world at depths of 2,500 to 4,000 meters (8,200 to 13,100 feet).

10) Deep-sea anglerfish are very rarely seen by people because they live in the deep ocean. Scientists can learn about them from animals that have been collected at the surface if they got there by a current called an upwelling, which brings animals and water upward.
