Live edge tables (also known as living edge tables or natural edge tables) is a specific design and manufacturing process where the craftsperson incorporates the irregular or gnarly edge of the natural wood into the final design of the table. Often smoothed out for comfort and safety, the edge retains a natural essence, creating a nature-inspired piece of beautiful furniture.
Live edge table designs are unique and naturally remarkable.
Depending on the craftsperson and the design, the live edge can be on the subtle side… displaying the natural edge of the wood along the side of an otherwise standard table:
Or it can follow the natural bends and curves of the tree from which it was created:
Most often, unless the table is being crafted from one ENORMOUS tree (which is very rare, and would be VERY expensive), these live edge tables include two or more planks, joined together using a butterfly joint or other joining technique. Often the natural gaps between the planks are left intact, as long as they aren’t large enough for any dishes and other utensils to fall through.
Other cracks or splits throughout the table are often jointed to ensure additional strength and durability at what could otherwise be considered weak structural points within the table.
These joints, when done properly, also add a layer of charm and uniqueness to each piece. However, as with everything about a live edge table, different techniques can be used on different pieces.
Creating a coordinated look with your Live Edge Tables
Matched with coordinating dining chairs, these pieces can make a bold statement in the home.
It’s important to pick the right chairs (or bench) to accessorize your live edge table. You can’t go wrong with a coordinating live edge bench, but those aren’t always available.
Finding the right blend of chairs, tables, and accessories will help you complete the look to create an absolutely wonderful dining experience.
Modern Live Edge Tables
Although originally categorized as rustic furniture pieces, because of their one-of-a-kind designs and nature-inspired shapes, live edge tables are now finding their way into modern and contemporary decor settings.
Today, a live edge table top does not make a table instantly “rustic”, that design classification now depends more on the base that is used to support it.

Other Live Edge Furniture
The most common furniture use for live edge tables is as dining tables, but live edge accent pieces – such as coffee tables, end tables, or benches – can also be found in today’s furniture marketplace.
Because these live edges are naturally created and not “manufactured” using bulk-processing tools, no two live edge tables are ever exactly alike. Each piece is a unique, but functional, work of art.
Whether you are going for a Rustic, Western, Farmhouse, or Contemporary decor aesthetic, a live edge table can be just the right piece to create a unique focal point in your home.
These live edge tables are only a small part of Art & Home’s Dining Tables collection. We’ve teamed up with some of today’s leading manufacturers and retailers of fine furniture to bring you the best for you and your home.
